Description
Arimidex (anastrozole) is used to treat breast cancer in hormone receptor-positive postmenopausal women. It is used as an adjuvant treatment for breast cancer in postmenopausal women who have received adjuvant tamoxifen for two to three years. The drug Arimidex is also indicated for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer in postmenopausal women.
Arimidex 1 mg contains anastrozole, which belongs to a group of drugs called aromatase inhibitors. Anastrozole, as a third-generation aromatase inhibitor, selectively attaches to and reversibly interferes with aromatase, a cytochrome P-450 enzyme complex found in the ovary, breast, and liver before menopause. Aromatase causes the aromatization of testosterone and androstenedione to estradiol and estrone, the final step in the biosynthesis of estrogen. The drug Arimidex can inhibit tumor growth in estrogen-dependent breast cancers.
