Description
Anastrozole is a highly selective non-steroidal inhibitor of aromatase, an enzyme that converts androstenedione in peripheral tissues in postmenopausal women into estrone and further into estradiol. Reducing the concentration of circulating estradiol in breast cancer patients has a therapeutic effect. In postmenopausal women, anastrozole at a daily dose of 1 mg causes an 80% decrease in estradiol concentration. Anastrozole has no progestagenic, androgenic and estrogenic activity. In daily doses up to 10 mg has no effect on cortisol and aldosterone secretion, therefore, when using anastrozole does not require replacement administration of corticosteroids.
Side effects of the drug are relatively rare. As a rule, they are associated with intolerance to the active ingredients or exceeding the recommended dosage. Among the most frequent side effects are rapid fatigue, drowsiness, skin redness, headache, and various negative manifestations of the gastrointestinal tract.
